Quick Reviews
Aug. 9th, 2008 09:50 pmSo, I've been watching a lot lately. Old School Power Rangers continues to be far crackier than I remember and full of awesome.
I found the first nine episodes of Zyuranger subbed, and it manages to be more and less cracky than MMPR at the same time, and quite entertaining.
The same subbers have also produced the first three episodes of Dairanger, which is where the Thunderzords and White Ranger come from. I've only watched the first two; I actually quite like it, even though I still really have no idea what the hell the villains mean to do, or any names whatsoever. I was worried after the first episode and a half that it was going to be nearly WTF-less, other than the Kirin Ranger (another boy yellow ranger, BTW) amusingly seeming to have something of a drunken-style fighting ('cause Kirin is a beer, after all), but then the Green Ranger did a fog attack that was basically as useful as Shabon Spray was for Sailor Mercury. AND THEN HE MAKES AN ILLUSORY FUCKING TRAIN HIT THE MOOKS. WTF. (Also, I wish MMPR had adapted the mook costume somehow. The heads are just black helmets except for a V showing pale skin and DARK red lips. No eyes. They're much cooler looking than the Z-Putties.)
I'm listening to the '90s London revival cast of Hair, and though John Barrowman has an excellent voice, the whole thing is absolutely soulless. The director seems to have gone through great ffort to make sure that the lyrics could all be clearly heard which effectively neuters the music. It's the rock musical. Half the point of the lyrics of some of the ongs is that they were just these blistering-paced lists that you weren't supposed to catch clearly. And then the protests chants are done with crisp diction and rhythm and not too loud and it's all just very "bless, they tried." It's quite possibly the only Hair album I don't remotely want to have the babies of. Sad.
Also, I've been watching QI/Quite Interesting. (I know that QI stands for Quite Interesting, but the internet has left me hazy as to which is the actual title. Certainly Fandom considers QI adequate, but... fandom.) I would ask why the panel show doesn't exist as a genre in the US, but I'm not entirely sure we have enough of the breed of celebrity who make the genre work. It's amazing fun, though.
