The inexplicable queer resonance.

Granted, this is mostly in reference to Power Rangers, but it is still a thing I love.

But seriously - I can trace so many facets of my own queerness back to this show it's not even funny. And I mean, I fell out of PR fandom before even realizing I was gay, so that is kind of... something I don't have a word for right now, but it is something.

I mean, my tastes in guys, the particular flavor of my camp sensibility (hell, probably my fondness for camp itself), my approach to my closet (I don't come out unless there's a context for it, but I only make the decision to never out myself to someone if they show signs of strong violent reaction) and activism (FUCK YEAH, ACTIVISM. LET US ALL CHANGE THE WORLD THROUGH SIGNS AND PETITIONS AND SHOUTING! WE CAN DO IT!) are all in some way or another informed by this show. I personally credit blame the second season morphing sequence for my appreciation of fine arms, for instance, and the whole closet/activism approach has its roots in the almost simple-minded drive for civic responsibility and bettering the world in small ways the early teams had.

Plus oh dear god the camp, but that really deserves its own post.

And I mean, I didn't get into the Japanese series until after having revisited Power Rangers and having realized this, and while they lack almost everything I've singled out about PR (yes, Henshin Heroes are campy, no, they are not campy in the same way Power Rangers are), they still have something about them that holds the queer eye. Part of it is definitely just the fact that there is homosocial interaction that is perfectly normal within Japanese culture comes off queer to a Western viewer, and there's also the fact that the heroes cast "for the moms" are pretty much going to appeal to gay men, too, but idk. There's something else.

I mean, somebody watch Ultraman Nexus and tell me that isn't, in part, a gay soap even though I know it wasn't written as such. (Especially once Ren shows up. Good god.)

I don't feel like I'm making this up wholesale, either, because it's not just the livejournal corner of fandom that is unusually full of queer people (which is kind of to be expected because hey, LJ). Even on Rangerboard, which is your standard dudebro/comics-fandom kind of cesspool of a gathering place, there's room for a number of prominent queer posters, and the mods generally (in my experience there, mind) come down on homopobic idiocy rather than brush it off. (Not enough, and it would be great if they took sexism and racism and so on down the list seriously too, but that a board like that can be bothered to oppose ANY *ism is notable.)

Also, rainbows and spandex.

The absolute number one thing I love about toku shows, the thing that most attaches me to the genre, I think, is this:

The shows do not care if they make sense.

That doesn't mean that they never do! Some of the best have excellent plots that leave few, if any, holes.

That doesn't stop the fact that seriously wtf those two just mind-melded to become a bug-eyed dude fighting a giant dinosaur head (for instance). (For the record, the dinosaur head had arms.) (Seriously.)

These shows will only selectively care about science, if at all (in the land of tokusatsu, Batman is not special for his ability to breathe in space. Sorry, Bruce). Things will appear to threaten our heroes for no reason other than that, well, they need to fight something. Movies produced by the same production team as the series, at the same time as the series, will be completely and utterly irreconcilable with the events of the series. Nobody but the most continuity-needy will care, because that's part of the genre.

(I'm always confused by why so many Internet Fans of these shows who got into them in part because they grew up with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers lighting up their life are So Goddamn Bothered by this, considering that MMPR: The Movie has jack-all to do with the events of the series. Not only are the events of the movie completely ignored by the series, much of it is outright replaced by a different set of events. To these Internet Fans, MMPR is giant nostalgiabomb great, including the movie, but a non-continuity movie from a different series? "OMG U GUIS PLOT HOLES EVERYWHERE WAT IS THIS *ASPLODE*" Baffles me.)

And this is before we even get to the old stuff. There are the series from the late 70s/early 80s where the production staff are still figuring out what the hell they're doing. On top of the fact that the fights are pure nonsense to begin with a lot of the time, the editing during the fight scenes makes figuring out what the hell is supposed to be happening an unwinnable game. Fun, but unwinnable. And then there are the Space Sherrif series, which have decided to cross live-action monster of the week fighting with trippy, Alice in Wonderland-type dream logic and utterly surreal visuals.

It is, to a surprising degree, an experience of its own.

(For all of you who expected my #1 favorite part of this stuff to be the sheer levels of camp: I am actually kind of just as surprised as you that this edged it out. We'll cover the camp later.)

That is why I have mixed feelings about National Coming Out Day.

Because you don't just come out and it's over. It's never over. You can only come out to the people you have met. Every time you run into new people, the "Is it worth it? Its it safe? Is it okay if they tell the people they know? [ad nauseam]" cycle starts all over again.

Or it's someone you know you will only see the once, and they make a heteronormative assumption, and you have to judge if a stranger's unknown response is worth correcting them.

Or people forget (or, more often, "forget").

So while I acknowledge the value of a day in recognition of the fact that coming out is still a Thing, and a thing that many people want to do and are comfortable doing, and might even, by existing, be the nudge someone who has been hesitant-but-not-afraid needs to just do it...

One day?

It's a pretty big lie.

GUESS WHAT, Y'ALL.

No really, guess.

Have you guessed yet? No? I guess I'll give you more time.

Oh, well now that's not terribly kind. But I guess it counts as a guess.

Well you're wrong. IT'S MY BIRTHDAY! I am now a quarter of a century old. It was a pretty uneventful day, though. I worked both my jobs, which didn't really leave time to do anything much else (I've been working part time at a college bookstore during their rush on top of full-time at my regular workplace, btw).

Oh, and I work eight hours tomorrow.

BUT THEN TWO DAYS COMPLETELY OFF FUCK YEAH. :DD

In other news, I have moved across town from the two-bedroom apartment I'd been in to a room in a townhouse that I moved into July 30th and has only juuust stabilized as far as residents overall go. (OMG SOON THE KITCHEN CABINETS WILL MAKE SENSE AND IT WILL BE GLORIOUS.)

So, my rent is up but it includes cable and heat and electric and internet and water and and and, so my bills are actually down. Working 40 hours a week (up from the 38 I had before getting the new position mid-July) has given a slight-but-noticeable increase to my income, and when I officially get the position in payroll, I'll be getting about $1.50/hr more, plus benefits.

OH HEY I FINISHED THAT PAPERWORK TODAY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY ME.

Also, last week the super uncompetent manager got fired, and while the new one is young and over ambitious and kind of on the fast-track to burnout (AND TOTALLY NOT KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT VENDORS AT ALL OMG, though he does at least outwardly acknowledge that I know what I'm talking about and if I say "don't do that again because" he probably won't do it again), his lofty goals are at least good goals, and he's still probably going to be better than the old one after burning out.

OH AND HEY. After like one-and-a-quarter years I have finally stopped being and Ohio licensed driver and got my PA one, and transferred the title and got a new insurance policy and everything.(Oh and I registered to vote, which I have been FAILBOT at for a while. Uh.)

I live here. With growing savings.

And I can probably go off food stamps soon! (Should, even. THAT IS MY GOAL FOR NEXT WEEK.)

(I set goals and follow through now. Soon there may even be lists. Because I'm a MOTHERFUCKING ADULT WTF.)

Oh hey, two days off. Maybe I'll finally get caught up on my currently releasing toku (well, the old stuff. I watch the weeklies and will miss OOO dreadfully) so that I can get back to the completed series I was in the middle of and last watched/live-tweeted at least like two months ago?

Or I could finish PONIES. They are starting up again soon...

(Also at some point over those days I intend to finish the scene where [redacted] from the ridiculous powerless HS AU Samurai fic I haven't worked on at all since starting. Maybe this time I won't get distracted by the internet.)

Sorry, you guys I just have SO MUCH to catch you up on.

...OH YEAH. I got (hopefully the last time ever) texted out of nowhere by Awful Ex about how he's so glad I'm still in this town and how he hopes I succeed at life and blah blah blah "I'm still in love with you."

I have two exes. How many "I'm still in love with you" messages have I gotten? TWO. WHAT THE HELL. :| At least Awful didn't wait THREE YEARS to send that one.

Also, he says he's deleted my number but AHAHAHAH EXPECTING HIM NOT TO LIE.

Oh, and he tried a "remember me by the good times" thing except the "good times" he chose were A)after he broke up with me B)a thing he was doing on his own that just happened in the same room I was in sometimes, and C)was a series he was marathoning six seasons of with the tv set loud enough that I couldn't sleep well. GOOD TIMES, MAN.

And then he misspelled my name. (And, correcting for spelling, used my birth name and not the one I go by, which is just a dick move.) (For those wondering, he didn't misgender me, I just... don't go by my birth name much anymore. It was still totally disrespectful and dismissive of my wishes, but there wasn't dysphoria or anything triggery. Just what would have been major annoyance if I had any fucks to give about him anymore.)

I think that's everything but IDK.

tl;dr: Life has been steadily improving. With health care in three months! \o/

So, when I'm not mainlining Japanese kids' superhero shows, my media intake tends to be queer cinema, because it tends either to be awesome, or to be awesomely bad. (And even when it's just mediocre, the pandering tends to be towards those who like their eye candy male, so there's at least that.)

Those of you who follow my twitter feed will already know, though, that I just encountered the most miserable piece of shit to ever call itself a movie. I have suffered the Star Wars Holiday Special. This was ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE WORSE.

I really don't even know if I can put the horror into words. Although, those of you who follow my twitter feed saw my attempts throughout. While there are some understandable descriptions of some of the ways in which this film is awful there, it's by NO means comprehensive. Merely scratching the surface.

The worst part is... you know what, scratch what I was going to say. The worst part is ALL OF IT. (Except the one actor, who was at some point in post-production, someone tried to make changes to make us think the movie was about him. It only made things worse, because then the movie WASN'T, but they'd gone out of their way to make sure we were wondering "what if?")

I don't even know, y'all.

(Someday, I hope to inflict this on a mass of people so that I'm not the only person I know who has suffered it. So no, you're not getting the name of it. Nyah.)

Day 25: Favorite Uniforms

Samurai Rangers. They're simple without lacking identity, like the Alien Ranger suits. There's not a disconnect between the suits and the helmets, like in LG. They're not SUPER BUSY like Turbo, and they're not just kind of stupid like the RPM suits.

They're a stylized samurai's robe with a symmetrified kanji on the helmet to tell you their element. All the information you need is there, and none of the useless frippery that sometimes happens. Plus, the powerup looks pretty awesome and feels more like something of the uniform than something on it.

SPD is a close second, tied with MF.

Samurai Rangers also win the unmorphed uniform, because ARMS.

Day 12: Favorite Villain Sidekick

This is a tough call. I mean, the Psycho Rangers collectively get as much screen time as some generals have, but as Linkara pointed out, they kind of interrupt the plot of the season (save for the "draining Dark Specter's energy" bit), rather than take part in it.

Tenaya was pretty awesome, but the Astronema retread (well-done as it was, bar how long it took to actually get moving) did a lot to remove her villain status, and I don't know that I can say that anyone working against the villains the last time they had free will before the final arc is best at being a villain sidekick, y'know?

And as much as I love Ecliptor, he is nobody's fucking sidekick.

So... Jindrax and Toxica? They (and Taylor) pretty much singlehandedly saved WF from being total shit, which gives them a free pass on defecting to good before the final battle. Seriously, in a season full of poor acting, poor acting hampering the moments when interesting plot was happening, and poor acting making Shayla's stupid singing even worse, they were fun. If only Tzachor had let the writers choose a berzerk button for Toxica that wasn't so directly translated from Gaoranger. I could hear the Oba-san/Onee-san in the Gao script every time Toxica said something about "Grandma? You mean older sister, right?" because THAT DOES NOT TRANSLATE DIRECTLY TO AMERICAN CULTURE. But.

In conclusion: IDK. I like a lot of them, so I've given it to the ones who stood out most in their season.

Day 10: Favorite Redeemed Villain

I want to say Ecliptor, I really do, but... he's not redeemed. Everything about him that makes the case for him being just as able to be purified by the Z-wave instead of just destroyed was already there when he was being unrepentantly evil. His love for Astronema and his honor in fighting are commendable, but he's STILL EVIL. That's why he's an awesome character. If he'd ever received any actual redemption in terms of having given up Evil, he'd be right here on top of the list, but he's not available to choose from.

I could spend ages running down why the likely more popular choices aren't mine, but instead, I would just like to get right into squeeing about Itassis. Why did she defect to the side of good? Because Magiranger footage says so in order to understand Good, she needed to become Good. SO SHE DID. How often do you see the whole Evil Cannot Comprehend Good trope playing out like that? In Magiranger You DON'T. This wasn't some emotional "but being bad hurts people" thing. There weren't any connections to rangers being used to try to pull her to the side of good. Hell, the rangers never even consider that it might happen.

Itassis just looks rationally at the situation, sees that the rangers are winning despite what she sees as severe relative weakness, and when she finds out what makes them strong, she goes "I don't get it. If I have to be good to get it, so be it. It's going to make me stronger and more knowledgeable, so it's worthwhile." And she definitely gives the impression she's more into exploring this completely unknown concept than she is in getting the strength that understanding it will afford her.

Is her redemption the most "pure" or "earned"? Absolutely not, and I'm certainly not arguing that it is. It's just the most fascinating.

Day 7: Favorite Color Ranger

I'm going to go ahead and interpret that as "rank the colors based on your feelings for the rangers of each color, as a group" because why not.

Metallic: Gold has almost enough rangers to count on its own, but I'm grouping in Silver, Titanium, and Mercury as well, since, once grouped, they're also almost enough to count as a group. Throw the metallics all together, and it's totally legit. As a group, Tyzonn is really the only weak member. I've already raved about Gem and Gemma and Zhane, because they're awesome. Ryan is amazing, but underused (I blame McDonald's, for reasons that make perfect sense if you know the PRLR production stories). Trey is a little ridiculous, but he's pretty and there are three of him. Jason is more of a real person, when he's back as the black Gold Zeo Ranger. And then Tyzonn. He's not a bad character, but he's not good, either, and he's unfortunately inconsistently written. Merrick is also pretty cool on paper, and has one of the few WF actors to reach "passable," though he probably wouldn't seem so okay in a better season.

Green: Adam, Trip, Ziggy, Bridge and Xander. Awesome. Also Carlos and Damon, who... exist. And Joel who is sometimes awesome, sometimes very not. And also Tommy, who just no.

Yellow: I originally had Yellow under Blue, but then I realized that really, only Ronny, Lily, and Summer bring blues down, and that's more through being dull than bad. Well, Ronny's annoying, but mostly ignored by OO, so that's fine. Plus, without a yellow, WF would have had as suck a cast as OO. That makes Taylor worth a lot. Also: TANYA :D .

Blue: Saban Blues: Never dip below "pretty cool", reach as high as OMG BILLY :D . After that, it gets REALLY inconsistent. Theres "NEVER GIVE UP", followed by OMG TORI <3, followed by "Sure he grows out of his ego but it lasts too long" Ethan, followed by "JUST STOP SPEAKING" Sky, followed by some girl with like three lines, followed by a stuntman whose right to a name I've revoked, followed by Theo, followed by <3 Flynn <3. Good blues are great. Bad blues are awful. Mostly good ones, though.

Pink: Kim is probably the pink-done-right, Kat was kind of shafted, Cassie was awesome. Kendrix... was interesting but sort of not much at the same time, until her self-sacrifice. Karone was amazing in the scripts written for Karone. In the episodes written for Cassie that got reworked... eh. Except for Jen, who is amaaaaazing, the rest of the pinks are kind of a sea of mediocrity.

Red: A lot of reds get saddled with being carried more by plot than by character (Nick), which means that a lot of them are kind of unmemorable as people. Might have placed higher if Rocky-as-red hadn't been shafted by "OMG KIDS IT'S TOMMY" writing.

Black: There haven't been many, and Adam and Dillon are the only ones to rise above mediocrity. Also, Will sucks SO MUCH.

White: Alyssa. Tommy. Sam. Sorry, Delphine, you can only do so much.

The rest: Actually, as a group probably rank semi-high, but for every awesome like RJ or "holy shit, this plot" Magna Defender, you have a blip like Nova Ranger or "did he do anything other than die for a while?" Mike. Very mixed group.

Day 6: Favorite Sixth Ranger

Sam!

Okay, no, not Sam at all. Sam is nobody's favorite sixth. Actually I have different answers depending on if we're going from a study-in-personality approach or a who-I-like approach.

For the former, Gem and Gemma, who I think are acceptable as one answer, because their psychoses kind of make them one person. Considering that this is true in Alphabet Soup, long before they spend a year in isolation surrounded by a world that is nearly completely dead, this is not merely a developed response to their environment. Certainly, it was helped along (by AS as well, since they were each others only peer for almost all of their time there), but still. Plus, they brought a level of pure sociopathy to the show that hadn't been even approached by any of the villains. Darkonda and Deviot both reveled in the suffering that their self-serving actions caused others (and occasionally caused suffering that was unrelated to advancing their needs), but Gem and Gemma literally do not care if their goals hurt others. Damn.

Also, their map of the desert was the bestest thing ever. RAINBOWS!

As far as who I just liked having onscreen, though, Zhane beats them a little. He's charismatic, cute, and loves harmlessly dicking with people, even if he sometimes crosses the line. (And points for legitimately regretting it when he realizes he has.) His powers are awesome, if joined by a dune buggy, and his morpher is so advanced a lightning strike repairs it.

Also, without him, an AU wherein Andros becomes an intergalactic Mr. Freeze couldn't exist.
