That's right. The Sarah Jane Adventures get (late, as I only found out the second series had aired right after the finale. Conversely, I get to marathon!) writeups while Heroes doesn't anymore. (Mostly because I've fallen into the "loves the epic camp of it" camp while most of its fandom went "OMG TEH SUCK.")

So. I like. The summary attached to the torrent said that the new girl is part of the ep, but apparently not until part two. Speaking of, I do hope that Maria doesn't leave at the end of this story - the show's trying to leave her leaving suspenseful, god bless, but I'd be able to tell she was going already even if I didn't actually know. I just hope she sticks around longer, because I'm quite the fan of Alan and, for some reason, even Chrissie. She's one of the few entertainingly annoying characters I've encountered who actually gets the entertaining part done right.

Liz Sladen really knocks out the proper responses to continuity-nod threats, by the way. She can throw "SHIT SHIT WHAT DO WE DO" and "I AM FORMULATING A PLAN" and "OH, GOD, WHY ARE THE KIDS HERE" and "I'M FUCKED" and "I CAN THINK LIKE THE DOCTOR WE WILL BE OKAY, MAYBE" out in proper shifting proportions. It's amazing.

Also amazing are the total shoutouts to Predator and The Star Trek Movie With The Whales, from the cloaked Sontaran and Sontaran ship, respectively.

I'm really going to miss Hot Dad, though. He's so hot!

(And it looks like the show is still getting the ever-more-sprawling Whoverse's best writers. Don't think I didn't hear about the shit that was the Torchwood radio play for the Hadron Collider.)

Re: Chrissie's last scene: DOES THIS MEAN SHE CAN KEEP SHOWING UP? PLZ TELL ME YES.

Also: Luke should probably have reacted more to the first permanent leaving of a friend in his life, shouldn't he? But he's that kind of going-to-be-hot-when-older that makes you feel dirty for noticing, even though you're not actually calling him hot now, so let's just move on to other things.

Like the fact that my summary lied and we got no new girl. Booooo. Although I guess the sudden replacement of a principle child actor should happen in the second story, the better to create tradition.

But seriously, Chrissie rocks.

As did the girl playing Luck, though I couldn't stop my mind from following "Where's Lucy?" with a deadpan "In the sky. With diamonds." *sigh*

The Sontaran kind of fizzled in the second half. They did a brilliant job of justifying why nobody died in a Sontaran episode, but the flat truth of it is that they shouldn't have given themselves a plot that made that justification necessary.

On the other hand, the fact that the Doctor just running off afterwards bollocksing things up for the people left behind being followed through with on another show was pretty epically awesome.

Next time: The new girl for reals this ti-CLOWNS. FUCK.

OH GOD CLOWN.

OH GOD SUDDEN UNEXPECTED CLOWN.

OH GOD SUDDEN UNEXPECTED CLOWN WITH FANGS.

WOW RANI'S HOT. (Thank god I happened upon her actress being legal even though the character isn't before seeing her. I mean, she's a she, so it's not like her being legal even matters, but it helps make things less awkward.)

CLOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWN.

Rani's mom is in no way Chrissie, writers, so please stop trying.

Pied Piper? Really? This needs spin. It seems next week will provi-

MANY CLOWNS OHGOD. AND THEY'RE JUST STANDING THERE, OBVIOUSLY ABOUT TO MOVE BECAUSE THEY ARE REAL ACTORS BUT THEY'RE JUST WAITING AND OHGOD.

At least Luke is reacting more to Maria leaving, even if he is being a hormonal idiot about it. Clyde's stupid too, though, because Luke clearly never fancied Maria. Quite possibly Rani, though. (And she quite possibly in return. You call a boy weird and then admit you're into weird not three minutes later? You don't say...)

Next week: OH GOD MORE CLOWNS

That was a bit of a letdown. Kind of turned into From Out of the Rain with slightly more plot.

In retrospect, I should have realized that part one really wasn't headed anywhere, but OMG CLOWNS.

And then part two didn't rely so much on clowns, because surely by this point the plot was creating tension, only... there wasn't one. Being that feeds on fear is old hat/ Tying this'un in with the Pied Piper was a good start, but it turned too one-note. Yes, dtealing children causes mass panic, and yes, Sarah Jane is very attached to Luke, but in it's dying last grasp at power, a being that feeds on fear should start branching out into more than just OMG CLOWNS and child snatching, primal fears though those be.

In short: Pennywise did it better, and I've never even seen/read all of IT.

But still better'n Torchwood most days, even improved as its second season was.

So, Clyde is suddenly important. Huh. Can't say it's a bad thing, but it'll take some getting used to. Mostly, I think it's that the show's being written more ensemble this year, but still.

Also: HOLY HAM, BATMAN, the actors playing the villains must be having so much fun.

I'm a bit leery that this older white dude has been conscripting black people - with Clyde it's clear it's due to his character's place on the show, but his first assistant? What need was there for her to be black? There's further unfortunate implications with who she was before being brainwashed, especially because her more sensible husband is white. Guess SJA couldn't escape the grand Who-and-Torchwood tradition of unfortunate race wank forever, because it's clear that the production team just didn't realize what they were doing. It's rather minor compared to the fun that is the rest of the episode, though.

Putting the alien fighting team in a position of skepticism in the face of something inexplicable was an awesome choice. As was the "older universe's physics" handwave that let them avoid the "some things can't be explained by science" point that far too many sci-fi shows wind up using at some point. It's amazing how many writers fail to realize that it totally cheats the rules of the world they've set up.

Also: Luke's lack of a birth sign is clearly not going to play into the resolution whatsoever Don't be ridiculous. (Not complaining, mind. It's brilliant setup, really; Luke's angst about it may be bumped up for the episode, but the fact of it has been there since day one.

Looking forward to part two.

Mostly predictable, but in a good way. I do like that though this is a children's show, they don't shy away from things - Trueman letting himself turn to dust instead of going back to a life he saw as nothing is an incredibly real, incredibly depressing truth of the world. There are people in that position, and it's nice that they let the line blur about where exactly he became that - that yes, it was his decision, but others helped create the situation in which he decided that.

I'm not a fan of his assistant blaming having given him all her money on the hypnosis. It's a perfectly understandable interpretation of the events for her to have made, but we saw in part one that she as paying mortgage money to Trueman before. The show basically went "HAHAHA, WE'RE MAKING IT HARDER FOR YOU TO LEARN A NECESSARY LESSON, MINOR CHARACTER."

Sarah Jane and Luke's relationship is so adorable and so fucked up. It's amazing.

Gita and Haresh are awesome, but they're not Chrissie and Hot Dad. Stupid GCSEs keeping Maria's actress away...
